ATV & Offroading
Get your heart pumping
Some of the most exciting ATV trails in North Carolina can be found in the Uwharrie National Forest in the southern Triad area. In fact, according to AllTrails, The Uwharrie OHV trail complex is the top-rated off-road trail in NC. Sixteen miles of trails are accessed via six different trailheads, ranging from easy to extremely difficult. In addition, multiple large acreage OHV trails for mountain bikes, dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and full-sized 4-wheel drive vehicles are available in both the mountains and coastal areas of NC – all within a few hour’s drive of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point and the NC Triad.
The off-highway vehicle areas often include trails and roads used by past logging and mining operations, giving you obstacles such as stream crossings, hill climbs, rocky ruts, and dirt mounds. The area provides campgrounds nearby, so you can also extend your trip and enjoy the trails the next day. So, have some fun and blow off a little steam going off-roading in the piedmont.
Dirt track racing has deep roots in the Triad, particularly in Winston-Salem. Bowman Gray Stadium was built in 1937 and sponsored midget-car dirt-track racing. The track was paved in 1947 in anticipation of the founding of NASCAR in 1948. In 1949, the first NASCAR race was run at Bowman Gray Stadium. By the end of that summer, the Bowman Gray races had moved to Saturday nights, where they remain to this day.
